"The Chosen: Invitations"

John 3:1-17

1.  Introduction: Faith and Film

2.  Jesus and Nicodemus:

     a.  He was a first century Pharisee.

          i.  There were ____________ pharisees.

ii.  The Jewish people would have thought of the Pharisees as today’s version of a “____________ star.”

iii.  They were highly ____________, holy men.

iv.  They were supposed to faithfully follow the 10 Commandments and the other ____________ laws in the old testament.

          v.  They would normally be highly educated, extremely wealthy, and were ____________.

     b.  He was a member of the Jewish Ruling Council (____________).

     c.  Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. (NIV)

          i.  This council is similar to our ____________ Court.

ii.  There are ____________ council members.

iii.  This reality made Nicodemus an elite of the ____________.

2  “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs (miracles) you are doing if God were not with him.”

3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

We don't get into heaven by being a ____________ person or doing good deeds.

We have to let Him cleanse the ____________v sin in our hearts and saturate us with his love and then fill us with his Holy Spirit.

5 Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.

6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’

ii. But true salvation is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit. And then Jesus explains it.

8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

9“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

10“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.

Moses prayed to God, who told Moses, 'Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when they see it, shall live. ' (Numbers 21:4–9)                       *This did not remove the source of the people's suffering; it enabled them to survive it.*

iv. (Should be iii.) Nicodemus and the Old Testament illustration found in this text.

14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”

iii. (Should be iv.)  Jesus is revealing something to Nicodemus. He reveals the purpose of his coming. What's the mission?  It's summed up in these famous words from John 3:16. You probably know them.

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

And then John adds…

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

         v. We are invited, but like Nicodemus, we have to ____________ to follow Jesus.

  • Anyone who looks up at the ____________ on the pole would be  healed and it worked.
  • ____________ or Relationship
  • Works or ____________

3. Conclusion:

     a.  An invitation that has nothing to do with who you are but will  ____________ you all you are.

     b.  An invitation that once you accept, you can never go ____________.

     c.  An invitation that lifts ____________ up.

     d.  An invitation for everyone-- With ____________ name written on it.

     e.  Have you been ____________? Let today be the day!

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
