The Chosen: Jesus Loves The Little Children

Mark 10:13-16

1.  Introduction: Faith and Film

2.  Jesus Loves the Little Children (Mark 10:13-16)

People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them,

     a.  This was a first-century Jewish tradition.

…but the disciples rebuked them.

     b.  Children had no social status in the Jewish culture.  They were often seen as insignificant and a burden, especially daughters.

When Jesus saw this, he was indignant.

He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

     c.  Children were precious and a priority to Jesus.

     d.  Jesus demonstrated something about the Kingdom of God and the disciples were about to learn something vitally important from the children they were ignoring and rebuking.

     e.  Jesus is both playful and purposeful and he teaches the children about God in a language they understand.

From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained praise…

Psalm 8:2a

     f.  Jesus didn't just elevate the social status of children, he believed they had enormous spiritual capacity.

Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.

     g.  Children have a capacity to grasp complex subjects that even adults sometimes struggle.

     h.  Jesus basically tells us grownups that we need to grow down.

3.  Conclusion: The Qualities of Children We Need to Emulate

     a.  Simple Faith

     b.  Childlike Trust

     c.  Spiritual Curiosity

     d.  Include and Invite Others

     e.  In the clip, Jesus appears to practice with the kids, the teaching he'll use with the disciples and other adults.

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners.

Isaiah 61:1

And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.

     f.  Application…

Jesus took me in his arms, placed his hand on my head and blessed me!
