The Chosen: Shabbat Rest

Genesis 2:1-3; Exodus 20:8-11; Matthew 11:28-30

1.  Introduction: Faith and Film

2.  Addiction To Busy

     a.  Busy is often a code word for important.

     b.  We are culturally programmed to believe if we are not busy, we don’t have value.

Busyness is not just a disordered schedule, it’s a disordered heart.

John Ortberg

     c.  Even when we are off, we are on.

In doing the work of the Lord, I realized I had become more focused on the work, then on the Lord.

3.  The Practice of Shabbat Rest

     a.  Shabbat (Sabbath): he[God] rested; ceasing [from work]

     b.  The practice of Sabbath allows one to cultivate a spirit of restfulness.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!

Genesis 1:1, 31a

So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed.  On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work.  And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.

Genesis 2:1-3

     c.  God created a kind of rest that is a delight.  What can you do for 24 hours that gives you the most joy?

The Sabbath is an entire day set aside to follow God’s example, stop, and delight in his world, in your life in it, and above all, in God himself.

Dan Allender

     d.  Sabbath is an invitation to an exercise of experiential grace.

     e.  74% of Americans are prioritizing experiences over product.

4.  Why Rest?

     a.  God built a rhythm into the fabric of creation.

          > Work/Rest; Waking/Sleeping; Day/Night; Seasons; Tides; Heart

     b.  God blessed the Sabbath day.

     c.  God made the day holy [set apart].  God makes time holy.

Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God…That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.

Exodus 20:8-11

     d.  The Sabbath is not a day off, but a day to worship.  Is what I am doing rest and/or worship?

5.  How to Rest?

     a.  STOP – Cease from all work, paid and unpaid.

     b.  REST – Do the things that restore and replenish you.

    c.  DELIGHT – What brings me joy?

     d.  CONTEMPLATE – Focus on the love of God.

7.  Conclusion

     a.  Remember the Sabbath.

    b.  Often, we forget the things that matter most.

“Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis.  Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me. For all that I require of you will be pleasant and easy to bear.”

Matthew 11:28-30

     c.  Jesus says, “You join your life with mine and I will take care of the REST.”
